Why not try the furminator instead, she will still shed even if you cut her fur, just shorter pieces of fur will fall off..
If the dog is short haired then you should have to clip it at all. Just a good brush through (do it outside so the hair doesn’t go all over the house!) should take all the dead hair out and the dog will enjoy it too!
Till you know what your doing I don’t see why not. Just make sure you have someone hold your dog so that while your trimming their hair that way you don’t accidently nick them.
Go for it just make sure that you have kool lube for when the blade gets hot
NO!!!
1. If you shave a dog like that, it will ruin her coat forever and never grow back right.
2. Shaving will actually increase the amount of undercoat that grows back, which in turn will increase shedding.
3. Shaving will not stop shedding, it will cause her to shed shorter pricklier hairs.
This is the biggest misconception in dog grooming, I don’t know who started this idea that you could shave a dog to stop shedding, but it doesn’t work!!
If you want to reduce shedding, have your dog professionally groomed and brushed out. See if you can find someone who offers the Furminator service.
please do not clip her. Just get a fine tooth comb and work with that. Her coat is a protection against the sun. Please ask a groomer in your area on what to use to help get rid of the shedding hair.
clipping the dog will not stop the shedding. Brush the dog, it doesn’t have to be done daily but a few times a week will help keep the shedding at bay. it is a great way to bond and relax with your dog. I’ve had cats and dogs that absolutely love the brushing time that it turned into a nightly thing when were were settled in for the night. Not to mention it is very good for their coats.
You can but it won’t make her shed less, you just won’t see the hair. Make sure that you don’t get her too short to where she sunburns. I would try brushing her out really well before shaving her down. Use a furinator type brush and a slicker brush. Shaving can ruin (soften) the haircoat to where she will always have to be shaved too. If you shave her down don’t make fun of her “ugliness” as dogs have feelings too. I wouldn’t shave her if she were mine. Double coated dogs look ugly shaved in my opinion.
The long and short of it is that if you want a dog which doesn’t shed a lot you don’t get a GSD. They are bred to have very dense undercoats to enable them to live and work outside in very bad weather and clipping her won’t change her genetics. In fact I think it might make her shed more to make up for loss of coat and also ruin the coat she has.
The only GSD’s I know who don’t shed very much live and work outside and so need to keep their coat in order to stay warm.
You can, however the thought that shaving a double-coated dog will reduce shedding is a common misconception and very much a myth. Shaving your dog will NOT reduce the amount of fur she sheds. In fact, shaving her will make the problem WORSE, not better, because she will shed exactly the same amount except now it will be too short to easily remove AND the cut ends will be sharp and will embed themselves into fabric (and skin…as someone who occasionally grooms dogs the worst part of that job is the dog hair splinters, ouch!).
NO. You are just going to damage the dogs coat and it will do nothing with the shedding your dog is still going to shed the same amount of hair. Dogs shed. If you shave your dog you will damage the coat not all breeds of dog can be shaved and doing so will cause sever coat damage your dogs coat will be forever changed it may never go back only patches may grow back it can change coat texture the risk of permanent coat damage is not worth it. Don’t do it you will regret it..
I would listen to the pros who do this for a living. I am also a dog groomer and unfortunately I have to do what the customer wants in the end, but if it were mine I wouldn’t shave him either. It looks silly anyway. The furminator works wonders. If you don’t know what you are doing you could burn the dog’s skin from the hot blade, it usually looks choppy if you don’t have any experience, and it will probably just stress your dog out causing him to shed even more. Buy a furminator at Petco or Petsmart for like $ 50 bucks and they also sell a shampoo to help shed less. It’s worth it! Keep up with it at least every six weeks (that’s about how long the furminator results will last) and your house will have much less hair. Now like everyone else that knows what they are talking about said, you can’t make a dog that sheds never shed. You can only reduce it. Shaving isn’t the answer.
